2014 Urban Leadership Institute (ULI)

The ULI class of 2014 is wrapping up their week of leadership training.  So far, they've worked on key leadership traits like communication, decision making, teamwork as well as performed a couple of service learning projects by helping to clean up the city of Utica by removing graffiti from troubled areas of the city and assisting the Players of Utica with some set projects at their site.  The group photo (pictured left) is from yesterday's Outdoor Adventure Based Learning session at Camp Nazareth where participants worked together all day navigating the challenges of a ropes course!  We will be graduating over 32 youth this year, making it our largest class yet! Congratulations to all that participated.  To view more photos from this years event, please visit our ULI page (CLICK HERE)
Utica GEAR UP in D.C.
Congressman Richard Hanna last week met with Utica GEAR UP representatives to discuss how the program supports low-income students and their families on their journey to succeed in college and beyond.

The program is a federally funded partnership between Mohawk Valley Community College, Utica City School District, Utica Safe Schools, Workforce Investment Board, Mohawk Valley Community Action Agency, Oneida County Government, Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees, and other local organizations. GEAR UP has helped so many students in our community become academically, financially and socially prepared to enter and complete college.

A quality education is one of the single most important factors in determining an individual's success in life. Programs like GEAR UP help ensure that every child has an equal chance to obtain a high quality college education.
